“What ELSE I learned from Bob Moawad
By Mark Matteson

They say when the student is ready to learn, the teacher shows up.
That was certainly true for me the year I met Bob Moawad. As I have written earlier, he came to our high school to speak at an assembly. The year? 1972. A few weeks later, on Super bowl weekend, I attended a two day workshop Bob conducted. The following year, 1974, Bob came to our high school and did a seminar for our Basketball team. I listened to some of his Increasing Human Effectiveness tapes again in the 1980’s. In 1992, I attended another two day seminar. It changed my life…and the lives of everyone that knew me.

Many more seminars and keynotes followed, hundreds of times I watched the master speaker share his philosophy and platform skills. It wasn’t until we were sitting at the high school 3A state tournament last year did I realize how much I had learned from this man and how grateful I was for all he did for me.

There were two kinds of lessons I learned from Bob.
1. The Obvious Lessons (OL). These were the things he taught, did or advised.
2. The Less Obvious Lessons (LOL). These were the ones I picked up on after the fact. After thinking about what I learned that day from him. Some subtle little thing he did that might go unnoticed by the casual observer.

Obvious Lesson #1
If you want to succeed in any new venture, do what Bob Moawad did his first few years in the speaking business. Give as many speeches as you can to anyone that will listen, even if it’s free. You never know who is in the audience that might want to hire you. If you throw enough spaghetti against the wall, some of it is gonna stick.

Obvious Lesson #2
After each seminar, he handed out evaluations and asked for feedback. The two simple but powerful questions were:
1. What did you like most about today’s seminar?
2. What one thing about the seminar would you improve?
After having conducted thousands of Keynotes, Seminars and Consulting engagements, I am always amazed at how powerful, insightful and sometimes embarrassing the answers are. It has really helped me grow as a speaker. All of the meaningful changes in my platform skills or content have come from client feedback. I am so grateful for the painful feedback.

Obvious Lesson #3
Visualize the outcome you seek. Write down your goals on a 3 x 5 card and close your eyes. Say it aloud. See it like a movie in your imagination. Play it over and over again UNTIL. Flip back on a WIN to gather up the positive emotion and then fast forward to end result. Visualize. It really is true; we become what we think about.

Obvious Lesson #4
Monitor your input. Pay attention to what you allow in. From the lyrics of songs to people you associate with. What are you reading? What are you watching on TV? The (Bad) News or PBS? G.I.G.O. = Garbage In, Garbage Out. If we consciously monitor and manage our input, we can indirectly manage our output.

Obvious Lesson #5
At 15 Bob asked me, “What are the HAVE To’s in your life?” I replied, “Well I HAVE to do my homework…” Bob smiled and said something you never hear from former high school teachers, “Nah, tell that teacher what to do with the homework!” I was in shock. “What? If I do that they’ll kick me out of school!” He smiled again, “So…” “But I wouldn’t get to play basketball?!”
Pausing for effect, he said, “SO, you WANT to do your homework!” I got it. Life is about choice. “I choose to do my homework so I GET to play basketball.” “Attaboy!” he said with a Cheshire cat grin.

Less Obvious Lesson #1
Bob and I had just made a sales call together in Downtown Seattle on a large insurance company. It went very well. It looked like they were going to become a client. During our debriefing after the meeting, I remembered something he said. The client had asked a question near the end of the meeting and Bob paused before he replied and said, “There is reason you asked that question…” Her answer to his statement was the one thing that was in the way of doing business. We closed the deal.

Less Obvious Lesson #2
We were going to a basketball game in Phoenix to watch the Suns play the Spurs. Bob always had very shiny shoes but this night in desert, the shoes he was wearing had an extra-ordinary shine to them. I commented on them.
“I never walk by a shoe shine stand without stopping if I have time. My clients, CEO’s, all have very shiny shoes.” The devil is in the details. It’s the little things that are the big things. Pay attention the details.

Less Obvious Lesson #3
I was at Bob’s house one day. I went into the guest bathroom. There must have been ten books stacked upon the porcelain book stand. There were Biographies, psychology, self-help, business, and a novel. He also had an enormous tape library, hundreds of audio programs and books on tape. I listened to many of those cassettes on my drive from Edmonds to Tacoma daily. 3-5 hours a day commuting left ample time to listen to educational tapes while I lowered the book value of my Bronco. If it’s true that a university education consists of 11,000 hours of learning, I earned TWO University degrees in the Bronco. Thanks Bob.

Less Obvious Lesson #4
We were sitting at the Tacoma Dome, watching Clover Park play North Thurston. Bob was in his coach/commentator mode. He had coached boy’s basketball for years and had won a state championship. His team’s “Hoosiers” like accomplishment is still in the record books, the best Team Free Throw Percentage…84%! What are the causes of success in basketball? Defense, Rebounds and Free Throws. I didn’t realize it until recently Bob inspired me to look for the common denominators or success in all things. In Parenting, being a Husband, in Sales, Speaking, what are the common denominators? Sometimes it’s only two or three things to master.
Find out what they are and become an expert in that arena.

Less Obvious Lesson #5
At the same game, the lady next to him asked a question to me because she over heard me say something about an O’Dea player being a junior. Bob immediately handed her my program and smiled. A little kindness; a little caring; no big deal. Her response was huge. She smiled and thanked us for the gesture.

When the student is ready, the teacher shows up. Bob has been teaching me for 32 years. As he has grown (and man has he grown), so have I. He has patiently guided, coached, prodded, and nudged me. My life would have been very different had I skipped that assembly that day in 1972. Bob always said, “You don’t need to be sick to get better.” His life is proof of that!

Bob passed away two weeks ago at age 66 after a courageous battle with cancer. I am going to miss you Bob. You are still teaching and coaching. It’s who you are. God Bless you Bob. You made a difference in my life.

Who are people that have touched your life in a unique and meaningful way?
I wonder how they would feel if you wrote them a letter like this?
